Extend The Table Lunch Fundraiser
November 10, 2019 @ 11:15 am - 12:30 pm
Because our commitment to welcoming all people, including LGBTQ+ people, we have taken on a goal of raising $18,000 in additional giving to “extend the table” of church community, including those who have been excluded in the larger church because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
We already have matching funds available, so we are now seeking $9000 in additional gifts.
The funds will be given to four organizations:
- UM-Forward – works to center the voices of LGBTQ+ persons and people of color in the theology and conversation in the United Methodist Church.
- Clergy Defense Fund – provides material support to clergy who will face complaints under the strengthened prohibitions adopted at General Conference in 2019 (organized by Reconciling Ministries Network and the Queer Clergy Caucus).
- Transforming Families – provides community and support to families with trans children in LA.
- La Oportunidad – founded by transgender leader Julia Garcia, works among the nearly invisible homeless and immigrant community near MacArthur Park to provide food, support, dignity and community
We will share more about this fundraising campaign at a lunch hosted by our Children and Youth Ministries on November 10. There, you will have a chance to hear from some of those people who are involved in the ministries we have chosen to support.

This giving challenge was adopted because of our resistance to the decisions made by the United Methodist Church’s General Conference in February of 2019, which strengthened our prohibitions on same sex weddings and the ordination of “self-avowed, practicing homosexuals.” These decisions are in direct conflict with the commitments of our congregation.
As an expression of our values and to provide direct support to those harmed by the denomination’s decisions, we set a goal of contributing an amount equivalent to a tithe of the funds we contribute to support the broader United Methodist Church through our apportionments. (We also elected to participate in an “alternative” apportionment payment option that our California-Pacific Annual Conference created, which seeks to divert funds from things that cause harm to LGBTQ+ persons.)
Thank you for your ongoing support of the ministries of our church, and of this special opportunity to extend the table of hospitality and welcome to some of those who have been too often excluded by our churches.
